Sun, 15 Nov 2009 16:26:04 -0800 Volbeat http://post.apodion.net/volbeat http://post.apodion.net/volbeat I'm watching Volbeat now. These guys dress like modern-day Green Day and play a pleasing burly modern heavy metal with vocals that make you think of Elvis and Danzig before Hetfield. The place isn't yet even half full but the floor is packed, the kids are responding well, and I can't begin to imagine what it must feel to go from being a band that your humble correspondant had never heard of before to playing Madison Square Garden at Metallica's personal invitation.

Sun, 15 Nov 2009 15:41:52 -0800 I am outside of a Metallica show. http://post.apodion.net/i-am-outside-of-a-metallica-show http://post.apodion.net/i-am-outside-of-a-metallica-show I am surprisingly early and I'm waiting for my contact. I'm drinking a strawberry smoothie and eating
small piece if rasberry cheesecake. Again surprisingly, considering the neighborhood, they were relatively cheap and I even saw her put real strawberries in the blender. The cake is a little dry, though.

There's a large number of Metallica shirts around, given the traditional proscription against wearing the shirt of the band you've gone to see. Then again at least one of those shirts was nestled under the silken folds of a matching black velvet Sean John track suit, so one imagines that all bets might be somewhat off.

Thu, 12 Nov 2009 07:58:00 -0800 One leg up http://post.apodion.net/one-leg-up http://post.apodion.net/one-leg-up

Here's a picture of the guitar player for this really douchey band that Flaming Tusk played with a while ago.

You can see that he's got irregular chops scissored out of his shirt, and one leg up on his monitor, Creed-style. Later in his set, he was to hop down from the stage and solo very badly on the floor while a female friend of his awkwardly if pre-choreographedly tore his shirt off his body.

All in all pretty douchey. If you are reading this, Guitar God, sorry for making fun of you in public. But not too sorry, because I never want to play with your band again.

Fri, 06 Mar 2009 06:38:30 -0800 The third evening. http://post.apodion.net/the-third-evening http://post.apodion.net/the-third-evening Tampa - New Jersey is the douchebag corridor. I know this because on Sunday there was a blizzard in Atlanta, GA. The effect of it was that Stolas and I sat in a stationary plane on a Tarmac for six point five hours, while icing, then deicing, refilling, and all of the other things that a plane does that don't include flying. We weren't coming from Tampa, of course, but our neighbors were, and they blessed us with a view into their lives.

Sun, 01 Mar 2009 06:10:27 -0800 The second morning http://post.apodion.net/the-second-morning http://post.apodion.net/the-second-morning More farting. I'm thirsty. I wanna go home.

We did the metal fest. For now I won't go into the musical specifics, as my thoughts thereon might end up appearing in other places, but I will say that it was awesome.

I am mostly impressed with how well the whole thing went off. With the exception of one (1) unruly Nazi kid, one (1) cancelled band (scurrilous rumours which I will not reprint), and one dead drum monitor, everything went off pretty much perfectly. That is, we enjoyed a free, multi-thousand-person free metal festival in a sprawling self-contained weird industrial park medieval ecosystem with (weirdly enough) minimal corporate presence and one of the best lineups I've ever seen, and every single person save the one Nazi kid was clearly very excited and happy to be there.

I'd say the best part of the day was when we used our press credentials to leave the ground, go get a Pibb Extra at the nearby Kroger and then cross the giant Georgian parking lot and take a crap in a clean, silent Chipotle bathroom. Brutal.

Soon we ride. If I'm lucky there's more waffle house before we take off from this surprisingly charming burg.

Sat, 28 Feb 2009 06:56:33 -0800 The First Morning http://post.apodion.net/the-first-morning-0 http://post.apodion.net/the-first-morning-0 I am underslept and lying on the couch of my Atlantan contact. I woke up just fifteen or so minutes ago from a combination of the dozen bottles of cheap beer I consumed last night draining from my bloodstream into the surrounding tissues and boiling into the open air, and the absurdly loud and repeated farts of my traveling companion, who is defiling the sleeping blanket that it will be my turn to sleep in next on the floor across this living room from me. I would have liked to sleep more.

Last night as a fitting prelude to today's rock fest was a house show in a suburb of Atlanta. It went all night; long enough for me to meet a dozen of the different characters that amy local urban/suburban house show scene requires. Mice In Cars were brutal, and Myke ended the show dramatically enough, discarding his guitar and sprawling across the floor, screaming. After their final climax I popped a balloon with my foot, for emphasis, which seemed appropriate. 'Headlining' - scare quotes Myke's - were The Humboldt Trio, a math rock group whose material suffered some of the deficiencies that nearly all math rock does, but whose chops were so unearthly that they made me never want to pick up an instrument again. When I told as much to their drummer he said, 'That's fucked up! But cool, man.'

I smoked too many cigarettes, had dinner at Waffle House, and went to sleep at 3:31. Curse the day. But the metal comes.
